Part of a group of negatives taken for September 28, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Caravan Had Royal Welcome in State," 5F:1. People celebrated the Overland Mail Centennial caravan, which commemorates John Butterfield and his Overland Mail Company from the 1860s. Butterfield traveled from Missouri to San Francisco, California, with his Concord Coach to haul passengers and mail. Pictured is a marker that reads, "This tablet marks a part of the Butterfield Stage Route from St. Louis to San Francisco 1857-1860. Erected by the Marion Chapter, D.A.R. and Major Bryan Pendleton Chapter D.A.C."
