The Lee Pickett collection documents scenes and people from Snohomish, King, and Chelan Counties in Washington State from the early 1900s to the 1940s. Local industries, such as the Heybrook Lumber Co. and Index Granite Works, are also depicted, and a large number of the photographs reflect the program undertaken by the Great Northern Railway Company in the 1920s to improve the line over the Cascade Mountains.

The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam. Michigan-born Lee Pickett moved in 1910 to the Cascade Mountains town of Index in Snohomish County, Washington. He photographed the construction of some of the first passable roads in the county, and during the 1920s he worked for the Great Northern Railway Company, documenting improvements in the line.
