General correspondence, 1943-1974.

Series 1 of record group 79-26 consists of general correspondence from Michigan Department of Natural Resources divisions (and its predecessor, the Department of Conservation), as well as from independent conservation clubs and associations for the years 1943-1974. Some correspondence is interoffice communications only, and some letters are addressed to specific individuals within and outside of government service. The bulk of the material comes from the late sixties and early seventies. Topics include breeding bird surveys, wildlife conservation, animal diseases, fisheries, legislation, pesticides, and remote sensing.

The 1925 Clark-McNary Act expanded the provisions of 1911 Federal legislation creating the National Forest System (Weeks Law). It made it easier for the United States Department of Agriculture to buy land from those sellers whose property was located within the National Forest System.
