Martha (Ship) logbook, 1800-1801.

The logbook of the ship Martha details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Barcelona and Malaga, Spain; Marseille, France; Livorno (Leghorn), Messina, and Naples, Italy; and Izmir, Turkey, Feb. 1800-Oct. 1801. The ship's home port was Salem; the owners were John, Richard D., and Ezekiel H. Derby, Benjamin Pickman, and Nathaniel West; the master was John Prince; the logbook keeper was Nathan Hovey. The logbook includes notes on wounds and injuries suffered by at least one merchant mariner on board; a quarantine; and an instance of punishment for stealing. During its voyage, the Martha spoke the frigate Essex and the ship Mt. Vernon (out of Salem).

Benjamin Pickman (1763-1843) was the son of Benjamin (1740-1819) and Mary (Toppan) Pickman. He attended Dummer Academy and, in 1784, graduated from Harvard College. In 1789, he married Anstiss Derby, daughter of Elias Hasket and Elizabeth (Crowninshield) Derby. Following his father's wishes, Benjamin studied law in the offices of William Pyncheon of Salem and Theophilus Parsons of Newburyport until 1787, when he abandoned law for commerce.
