Correspondence with John Chipman Gray [typescript], 1862-1865.

Typewritten copy of correspondence between John Chipman Gray, a soldier in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and John Codman Ropes, a Boston lawyer, during the Civil War, 12 Oct. 1862- 27 June 1865. Correspondence describes Gray's experiences in the Army serving under Gen. George Henry Gordon, including a promotion to major and his appointment as a Judge Advocate, in various locations as Maryland Heights, Folly Island and Hilton Head (S.C.); Ropes experiences and observations as a Boston lawyer; and their discussions regarding the status of the war and the current political climate in the United States. Also includes letters by Gray to his mother Sarah Russell Gardner Gray, father Horace Gray, sister Elizabeth Gray, and brother Horace Gray.
