Mortimer was educated at Smith College (A.B., 1953) and Columbia University. From 1957-1975 she worked at the Houghton Library at Harvard University. In 1975 she returned to Smith as curator of rare books where she served until her death in January 1994. She was fascinated with the publishing history of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and collected editions of the text, secondary sources and the materials in this collection.
