Blakeslee was born January 13, 1912 in Evanston, Illinois to Walter Conklin and Carolyn Van Akin Blakeslee. John Thomas Biggers (1924-2001), African American artist, was born in Gastonia, North Carolina. He attended Hampton Institute in Virginia and started taking art classes under the tutelage of Viktor Lowenfeld. Lowenfeld moved to Pennsylvania State University, and Biggers followed him to study in the art department there. He received his doctorate from the University in 1954. A few years earlier, Biggers had moved to Houston, Texas to establish the art department at Texas Southern University. ...
