Pearl S. Buck letters and papers, 1941-1969.

The collection consists of six items, including three typewritten letters, a short story manuscript, and two magazines featuring her work. The letters include: to Mrs. Webster, a bookseller, 19 Feb. 1941, in support of the book My narrow isle, by Sumie Seo Mishima, which she fears may be neglected due to various prejudices; to Marylyn Davis, 5 Jan. 1956, on Welcome House letterhead, thanking her for her support; to Jon Bracker, 14 Nov. 1969, responding to his question that she had no single literary influence. Also, typed manuscript of the short story One of our people, heavily annotated, including several handwritten pages inserted and a revised ending; American weekly, 22 Dec. 1957, featuring the Pearl S. Buck Christmas story, A certain star, and a full page photo of the author; American tree farmer & forestry digest, March-April 1962, including the one-page article, I am a tree farmer, by Pearl S. Buck, describing her interest in tree farming.

Pearl S. Buck was the daughter of American missionary parents, and spent the first seventeen years of her life in China. Her third novel, The Good Earth, won the Pulitzer Prize, and a Nobel Prize for literature followed, citing The Good Earth as well as her biographies of her parents. Critical reception for her works has been mixed since these early successes. A prolific and optimistic author, most of her fiction is set in China, and she displays great affection for the place and her characters....
