Series 48 of record group 58-17 consists of a map and profile (ca. 1841) of the Saginaw Canal, originally collected by the Michigan Lands Division. Documents the area in T.9 N., R.1 W. and T.9 N., R.2 E., Maple River (Gratiot County) to Bad River (Saginaw County). Survey No. 1 documents sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; Survey No. 2 documents sections 7, 8 and 9. Shows various physical features. The maps are roughly 19 1/2" by 26 1/2" in size, with a horizontal scale of 1,000 feet : 1/10 foot, and a vertical scale of 40 feet : 1/10 inch.

Charles F. Smith enlisted at age 19 in Co. E, 2nd Michigan Infantry, Apr. 17, 1861, at Niles, Mich. He mustered on May 25, 1861. He was wounded in action at Fair Oaks, Va., May 31, 1862. He re-enlisted Dec. 31, 1863 at Blain's Cross Roads, Tenn. and mustered Jan. 1, 1864. He was wounded in action at Jackson, Miss., July 11, 1863. He was wounded and taken prisoner near Petersburg, Va.. Sept. 30, 1864. He returned to his regiment on Apr. 24, 1865. He was made a sergeant, June 16, 1865 and mustered...
