Papers of Captain Moses Greenleaf of Newburyport, Mass., company commander in Massachusetts 11th Regiment (Ebenezer Francis's Regiment, 1776-77 and Benjamin Tupper's Regiment, 1777-81) of the United States Continental Army, 1776-80, while serving at Fort Miller (N.Y.), West Point, Valley Forge, Albany and Saratoga (N.Y.), and Bennington (V.T.), among other places. Documents include an index to the volume; a daily diary kept by Greenleaf April-July 1777; disbound orderly books; general orders; lists of men hospitalized and discharged; provisions, clothing and sundries returns; quartermaster's memos; Congressional resolves; court-martial records; payrolls; muster rolls; inspection rolls and returns; donation rolls; and provision returns for Col. Tupper's Regiment. Also includes a biographical sketch of Greenleaf written by his son Simon Greenleaf, 1839; and a photocopy with unverified transcription of the 1777 diary.

Greenleaf, Simon, 1783-1853

Simon Greenleaf was born on December 5, 1783 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where he attended the Latin School from 1790-1799. In 1801, he entered apprenticeship in Ezekiel Whitman's Gloucester, Maine law office. In June 1806, Cumberland County, Maine admitted Greenleaf to the Bar. On September 18, 1806, Greenleaf married Hannah Kingman, daughter to Capt. Ezra Kingman of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
