Friendship (Ship) logbook, 1797-1798.

The logbook of the ship Friendship details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Jakarta (Batavia) and Portland, Me., Aug. 1797-June 1798. See Log 1797F2 for another log of this voyage. The ship's owners were Waite & Peirce; the master was Israel Williams. The ship's home port was Salem. The logbook includes notes on birds seen during the voyage; shipboard occupations; equipment and supplies on board, specifically provisions; and a description of an experiment in the distillation of seawater. During its voyage, the Friendship spoke the ship Hazen (out of Salem) and the sloop Maria (out of New York).
