Lord was educated at Smith College (A.B., 1887), Bryn Mawr College (M.A., 1890) and Teachers College, Columbia University (Ph. D., 1896). She also attended Newnham College, Cambridge University. Lord taught history at Smith College, 1890-1894 and at Goucher College, 1897-1919.
