Correspondence of John Peter Jones, 1862-1881 (bulk 1862-1865).

The collection consists chiefly of letters from Jones to his wife written from various camps and hospitals before his capture at Gettysburg and after his exchange in 1865. Jones's letters are filled with affectionate sentiments. He mentions his camp at Chattanooga and preservation from harm; a foraging expedition to North Carolina and the capture of 4 buffaloes (Union men); a possible slave purchase; his health and hospitalization; and the start of the Gettysburg campaign; In addition he sends news of his family and relays second-hand war news. A post war letter discusses finances. Additional correspondence includes a letter from Mollie's brother Richard, 1862, consoling her on the loss of a baby and being treated with "horse medicine" for an unnamed illness. A letter from Molly, 1864 August 16, conveys news of the death of two comrades, sends money, and hopes he will be exchanaged. A letter fragment from an unidentified writer in the Petersburg defences (probably Jones's brother Samuel) describes a recent skirmish in which a friend was killed, life in the trenches, and the worn out state of the army. A copy of a letter, 1881, from Cornelia Rives Harrison regards the renting of River Lawn Farm. With the letters are copies of photogrpahs of Jones and his wife.
