3 volumes of cartes de visite portraits of Union and Confederate officers of the Civil War, collected by Col. Theodore Lyman. Vol. 1 contains photographs of Union officers; Vol. 2 of Union and Confederate officers; and Vol. 3 of Confederate officers. All of the images are identified, and some include the autograph of the sitter. Photographers include James Wallace Black of Boston, Mass., Frederick Gutekunst of Philadelphia, Penn., Charles DeForest Fredricks of New York, N.Y., and Alexander Gardner and Brady's National Photographic Portrait Gallery of Washington, D.C., among many others. There is also one tintype in Vol. 1. All of the photographs are black-and-white.

Alexander Gardner was born in Paisley, Scotland, on 17 October 1821. In May of 1851 Gardner visited the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London, where he saw the photographs of Mathew Brady. Upon his return to Scotland, Gardner began to experiment with photography and devoted his time to learning about this new art.
