Family papers, 1853-1864.

The collection contains letters written to or by members of the Strong family of Bloomington, Indiana during the Civil War. Most of the letters are from John W. Strong with the 82nd Indiana Regiment to his sister Jennie (Jane Strong) in Bloomington, September 1862-August 1863. The letters generally deal with the regiment's location and activities and inquiries and comments about people and events back home. The collection also includes letters from Union soldiers William Wilson (82nd Indiana), Leroy S. Mayfield (22nd Indiana), and Robert W. Weir (133rd Indiana) to Jennie Strong discussing their involvements in the war and comments on local events in and around Bloomington during the years 1862-1864. Also included are several handwritten poems and stories, mostly by Jane Strong.

William F. Allee was born in Hendricks County, Ind., in 1844. He enlisted as a private in the 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company K, in 1861. Allee participated in every regimental engagement and was promoted to the rank of captain in 1865. After the war he married Eliza Merrill Parker and the couple raised four children. Strong, John Henry, 1866-

John W. Strong was from Bloomington, Indiana and served in Company "F" of the 82nd Indiana Regiment during the Civil War. He was mustered in on 30 August 1862 and died from disease on 5 August 1863 at Winchester, Tennessee.
