Album amicorum [manuscript], 1564, 1590-1609.

Autograph album of a councilor to the Duke of Mecklenburg probably created during the wedding celebrations of James IV of Scotland and Anne of Denmark in 1590. Contributors include: the King and Queen of Scotland, 1590 (p. 3); Christian IV of Denmark and Sophie, the Queen Mother of Denmark, 1591 (p. 2); many Danish and German nobles including other members of Anne's family; and Peter Munch, Nicholas Kaas and George Rosencrantz, three of the four co-regents during the minority of Christian IV (Peter Guildenstern was the fourth regent).

James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother. He was learned, taught by some of the best tutors available in the Scottish Humanist school, but also deeply superstitious, secretive and something of a misanthropist.
