George family collection, ca. 1890s-1960s. [graphic].

The emphasis of this photograph collection is primarily Southeast Alaska and includes ship views and portraits of governors and other well-known Alaskans. Interior views of George's Gift Shop and Joe and Thelma George are included. The collection also includes some manuscript materials, newspaper clippings and correspondence, photograph captions, theater advertising, and publications, photographs of Sydney Laurence paintings and a plastic mat drawing by Florence Melewothuk. Photographers represented in the collection include Winter and Pond Co., Ed Andrews, Trevor Davis and others.

Michael George, a widower, came to Douglas, Alaska with his four children, Mamie, Tom, Joe and Gus, in 1912. Michael owned half interest in George Meyers General Merchandising on Beach Road below St. Ann's Avenue and employed his children there as they grew up. Later he opened his own general merchandising store then purchased the Leader Department Store across the Channel in Juneau.
