Kingsbridge Heights Jewish Center "Book of Life" 1927, 1999

The collection consists of a register (50.8x36.83 cm.), entitled Sefer ha-Hayim (Book of Life), in which congregants' names and dates of death were inscribed, for the purpose of recording the dates on which to recite memorial services. Names are listed by family. The inscription on the front cover indicates the register was donated by Louis Bachrach in memory of his father Nathan Bachrach. The register is mostly blank. Also included are 9 photographs of the synagogue taken by Shulamith Berger in 1999.

The Kingsbridge Heights Jewish Center was established in 1924 and was a vibrant Orthodox synagogue in the Kingsbridge section of Bronx, N.Y. for many decades. For over 50 years of its nearly 75 year history, the synagogue was served by three rabbis, Rabbi Israel Miller, Rabbi Abraham Kupchick, and Rabbi Nathan Bamberger. The synagogue closed in 1999.
