Papers, 1913-1939.

A few letters of Vachel Lindsay to Cockrell, but the majority are written by wife Elizabeth to Cockrell. The letters tell how she continued with her life, paying off enormous debt left by Lindsay, raising her children, completing her Master's at Mills College in California and going on to teach in Connecticut. Includes unpublished article on Lindsay written by his wife and a memoir of Lindsay written by Cockrell. Christmas card designed by Elizabeth Lindsay.

Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, IL. He studied in Ohio, Chicago, and New York and acquired a reputation as a poet and lecturer. Lindsay became famous for his walk from Springfield, IL to New Mexico in 1912, and for an unusual method of writing poetry. In 1924 he arrived in Spokane where he worked as a columnist for the "Spokesman-Review". He returned to Springfield in 1929, and at the time of his death was a major figure in American poetry. Vachel Lindsay, prominent early twentieth century poet from Springfield, Illinois, met Dura Brokaw Cockrell in 1904 when they attended art school together.
