George Wilcox Peavy was born 12 November 1869 in Howell, Michigan. He received his Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts at the University of Michigan. Walter Fraser McCulloch joined the faculty of the Oregon State College School of Forestry in 1937. He left Oregon State briefly during World War II to serve as assistant state forester; during this time he developed and administered Oregon's Forest Conservation Act. Paul M. Dunn served as Dean of Forestry at Oregon State College from 1942 until 1955, when he joined the St. Regis Paper Company. Dunn was instrumental in obtaining the 6200-acre Adair Tract for teaching and research and it was subsequently named the Paul M. Dunn Research Forest in his honor. The first forestry class was taught at OSU in 1896 and ten years later the first four-year degree program was established.
