The collection contains photographs arranged into several sections. The first consists of photographs made by N.B. Miller, assistant naturalist for the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury Fur Seals Investigations of 1896 in the Pribilof Islands (located in the Bering Sea); they depict the Pribilof Islands, Aleut peoples, and seal and otter hunting. The second major part of the collection consists of photographs of Alaskan fish hatcheries dating from the 1899 federal Fisheries Act (amended in 1900) that required each person, company, or corporation to establish a hatchery near their fishing operation.
