John D. Bates, Sr. papers 1863.

Holograph letter written in 1863 by John D. Bates, Sr. to his son John D. Bates, Jr. concerning the capture of the Confederate cruiser Florida and France's offer of the Mexican crown to Maximilian. In addition to the letter and its envelope, there are two enclosures. One is a holograph letter from Captain William Lull to John D. Bates, Sr. concerning his ship. The other is a handwritten sheet of instructions on firing a furnace.
