Lutheran Mission New Guinea Files 1924-1929; 1931-1934.

This series comprises material pertaining to the New Guinea mission field during the period of time in which the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa and Other States (Iowa Synod), and later the American Lutheran Church (ALC), worked with the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia to administer orphaned German mission fields in New Guinea. The mission at this time was referred to as Lutheran Mission New Guinea (LMNG). Records are from 1924-1949 with the majority dating from 1931-1934. It is unclear if the records were kept by the LMNG itself and then later sent to the ALC's Board of Foreign Missions (BFM), or if the board itself generated the majority of the records. The series contains primarily reports, articles, newsletters, essays, and promotional materials pertaining to either the New Guinea mission field, or general work of the Neuendettelsau Mission, Germany. It does not contain business records for the mission field. Several of the reports are in German. One item that may provide further information as to the transfer of the Madang field to the ALC from Neuendettelsau is titled "Die Neuordnung in Newguinea," or "The Realignment in New Guinea." This series of reports contains information relating to the field from 1926-1932 and its eventual transfer to the ALC. The "unidentified" reports referred to in the container list pertain mostly to general New Guinea mission work and issues regarding foreign mission work in general. Records are arranged alphabetically by subject.
