Scrapbook containing material related to the development of the wireless radio in the United States. Includes photostats of correspondence (1900-1902) with Edwin Hutchinson Smythe, photostats of Smythe's research notebooks, photographs of the de Forest-Smythe-Freeman wireless system, clippings, and a trypescript introduction by Lloyd Espenshied, co-worker of Smythe at Bell Telephone Laboratories. The scrapbook was assembled by Lloyd Espenchied.

Lloyd Espenschied (1889-) was born in St. Louis, Missouri and in 1909 graduated from the Pratt Institute in electrical engineering. During 1909-1910 he was on the staff of the Telefunken Wireless Telegraph Company. From 1910 to 1934 he worked for American Telephone and Telegraph Company in various capacities; and from 1934 to 1937 he directed high-frequency transmission development for the Bell Telephone Laboratories. Lee De Forest was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on August 26, 1873. He was a graduate of the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University in 1896 and received a Ph.D. from Yale in 1899. He was an important contributor in the development of wireless telegraphy in the United States. He started multiple radio broadcasting companies and patented 300 inventions in his lifetime.
