Sanity hearings and criminal cases of Clarence V.T. Richeson, Leon F. Czolgosz, and Bertram G. Spencer : scrapbooks and photographs, 1910-1938.

Volume one of the scrapbooks contains clippings, affidavits, and handwritten correspondence related to the trials of executed murderers Clarence Richeson and Leon Czolgosz (assassin of President William McKinley), both declared insane. Includes index. Also includes two letters from Emma Goldman related to the Czolgosz case. Letters were added later and are not included in the index. Volume two of the scrapbooks contains trial transcripts, clippings, photographs, and correspondence related to the mental competence of convicted murderer Bertram G. Spencer, with Briggs acting as key expert on criminal insanity for the defense. There is also one box of glass negative plates that are images of Czolgosz and Richeson.

Briggs (Medical College of Virginia, M.D. 1899) practiced medicine in Boston, Mass. and was instrumental in founding the Boston Psychopathic Hospital and Metropolitan State Hospital.
