Roland Bainton was born in England and emigrated first to Canada in 1898 and then to the United States in 1902. He received a B.A. from Whitman College, a B.D. from Yale Divinity School, and a Ph.D. from Yale, as well as many honorary degrees. Wach was born in Chemnitz, Germany, descended on both sides from the Mendelssohn-Bartoldy family.
