Loewenstein was born in Munich, Germany and educated at Paris, Heidelberg, Berlin and Munich Universities. He practiced law in Munich (1918-1933) and taught at Munich University (1931-1933). In 1933 he came to the United States and taught at Yale University (1933-1936) and Amherst College (1936-1961).
