Edward John Long was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1900. He was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1918, and resigned one year later to attend Columbia University. He later attended Oxford University. On November 16, 1937 he was appointed a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
