Paul F. Erwin was born in 1919 in Pocatello, Idaho. He graduated with a B.S. in education from Miami University of Ohio in 1941. He taught history and was a principal at schools in Ohio until 1946. That year he began graduate studies in history at Northwestern University, taking religion courses at the Garrett Theological Seminary as well. He received his master's degree in 1949.
