Republican senator, newspaper publisher and editor, war correspondent. Lafayette Young served in the Iowa Senate from 1874 to 1880, and from 1886 to 1888. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate and served from 1910 to 1911. He founded and published the Atlantic Telegraph newspaper (1871-1890).
