A confession of Oliver Overstreet, 1857, April 7.

Typescript copy of a confession given to the Probate Court, Territory of Utah, County of Salt Lake, by Oliver Overstreet (d.1857). In it, Overstreet claims he was paid $500 by Brigham Young to impersonate Oliver Cowdery, one of the witnesses to the Book of Mormon, at a conference in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1848. Overstreet writes that Young wanted him to reaffirm Cowdery's calling as a witness to bring lapsed Mormons back to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and for the purpose of "milking the Gentiles." Overstreet says that he felt it necessary to confess to the duplicity after Young began quoting what Overstreet had been told to say as Cowdery's own words. Also entitled "The Overstreet Letter."
