William congratulates Markham on his 82nd birthday. He heard about the car hitting him and hopes it wasn't serious. After being bereft of his wife companionship in 1932 he has written quite a bit. He is preparing a new edition of poems and 2 historical works. He has kind recollections of Markham even though he hasn't seen him in many years.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
