General description of the collection: The Johnson Hagood photograph collection consists of photos comprising material of both Major General Johnson Hagood, Sr., and Colonel Johnson Hagood, Jr. These include the 7th Regiment, United States (U.S.) Coast Artillery Corps (CAC); service in France during WWI; numerous aerial and on the ground photos of Camp Eustis, Virginia (1919-1920); portrait photos of Hagood, Sr., at ranks of brigadier general and major general; WWII - Holocaust / atrocities photos; portrait photos of Japanese high ranking officers and civilians; 23rd U.S. Infantry Regiment in training (1935); buildings at Fort Omaha, Nebraska (1935); cavalry training at Fort Bliss, Texas (1934); and photos dealing with the Dominican Republic intervention in 1965.

Hagood, Johnson, 1873-1948

U.S. Army officer. Born in Orangeburg, S.C., he graduated from West Point in 1896 and saw service in Europe during World War I. He was promoted to Major General in 1925. After a political controversy in 1936, Hagood was relieved of command of the Eighth Corps by President Roosevelt and soon afterward retired; in congressional testimony (solicited in confidence but then publicized) he called WPA funds "stage money" and suggested that they would be better used for improvements to army housing.
