Stereographs, chiefly of the Monterey Peninsula and vicinity [graphic] / photographed by C.W.J. Johnson. ca. 1875-1890.

Includes scenic views of the Monterey and Carmel vicinity, coastal landscapes, the Hotel del Monte, outing groups, and unidentified mountainous terrain presumably in the hills of Monterey or Santa Cruz counties. One view of brick-walled mine(?) shaft entrance is included. Several views may date from Johnson's time in Watsonville, Calif., prior to 1880.

C. W. J. Johnson arrived in California during the Gold Rush. After living in Feather River, Grass Valley (1863), and Nevada (1868), he moved to Eureka where he opened a photographic business. In 1881, he settled in Monterey, becoming the Hotel del Monte's first official photographer, and operated a gallery on Alvarado Street. From the description of Card Photographs ca. 1885-1900.
