The First Kentucky Brigade was part of the Confederate Army. it became known as the Orphan Brigade after Union troops captured Fort Donelson (1862), leaving the brigade cut off from it's home state for the duration of the war. Despite this, the Orphan Brigade distinguished itself on and off the battlefield by maintaining high morale, discipline, and effective military tactics. The First Kentucky Brigade, Confederate States of America (CSA), composed of several infantry and artillery units, left the state in 1861. Unable to return home until after the war, veterans referred to their unit as the Orphan Brigade. The Orphan Brigade Kinfolk Association was founded in 1987 to preserve the memory of the Orphan Brigade by gathering information, including photographs and biographical information on the original soldiers.
