[Public surveys of Michigan, sketch G].

Series 50 of record group 59-4 consists of two sketches of sketch G of the public surveys of Michigan as conducted by Leander Chapman. The items were originally collected by either the Michigan Geological Survey or the Michigan Lands Division. The 1853 sketch is 21" x 22" in size, with a scale of 13 miles : 1 inch. The 1856 was lithographed by Ackerman Lith. of New York and is 21" x 21" in size, with a scale of 18 miles : 1 inch. The sketches document the progress of surveys, township lines, rivers, etc., but does not show settlements or roads.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
