Series 98 of record group 59-4 consists of a map (1869) of the Ontonagon and Montreal River State Road, originally collected by either the Michigan Geological Survey or the Michigan Lands Division. The map was surveyed by A. Rudolph, as located by D. Beaser. The road is located in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The map is 36 3/4" x 106 1/2" in size, with a scale of 1 mile: 2 in.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
