Diary and correspondence, 1853-1898.

Diary, 1862-1892, kept by a lumberman of West Great Works, Lewiston, Brownville and Ellsworth, Maine. The first couple of diaries have very few entries -- primarily lists of pine or spruce logs marked and lists of provisions left at the camp. The latter diaries have more and more entries that detail Cushman's business and social activities as well as news events. The last two diaries are dated 1898; however, a note states that the entries are for 1908 and 1909 and that they were kept by James' son Ralph. The correspondence sent to Cushman from various friends and family includes letters by Ephraim Brawne, a soldier in Co K 2nd Regt Maine, and James Beckwith and Andrew M. Benson, soldiers in Co C 7th Regt Maine. Beckwith and Brawne provide an account of the First Battle of Bull Run.
