Hermannsburg Mission Field Photograph Album 1900-1908.

This series comprises a bound photograph album containing 42 sepia-toned photographs of the Hermannsburg Evangelical Lutheran Mission field from approximately 1900-1908. These are images of the India mission field prior to the start of the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States (JSO) involvement in that field. This fact makes the photographs particularly interesting. Many have accompanying captions written in German. Several are unidentified and the majority are undated. Many of the images captured are of the missionaries and their families. Of particular interest are several photographs taken at missionaries' weddings. In one instance the portrait includes four couples who were all married on the same day. There are photographs taken of the Lace School at Gudur; the Industrial School at Nayudupeta; a catechist class; a mission band; school groups; a 1902 Lutheran conference at Gudur; and missionaries enjoying picnics while at Kodaikanal, India, in 1903 and 1905. Several photographs are of different churches and mission buildings at Tirupati, Sullurupeta, and Nayudupeta. The photographs are affixed to album pages and no attempt was made to remove them. The album and photographs are in good condition, but the captions are difficult to read.

Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. The Joint Synod merged with the Buffalo Synod, Iowa Synod and Texas Synod in 1930 to form the American Lutheran Church. See C.V. Sheatsley's History of the Joint Synod of Ohio for further background.
