The papers contain six letters written from the University of Virginia in 1856-57 to his grandmother Sarah Beatty, wife of Adam Beatty of Washington, Kentucky. Beatty describes his arrival at the University, search for housing, the weather, health, exams, the Columbian and Washington societies, student deaths during the typhoid epidemic, 1857-1858, the student amusement of dislocating joints, and his desire for another year of study before beginning law. In addition he conveys news of his parents and sisters in California, including his father's firm of Robinson, Beatty and Botts. With these is a 1905 letter to his cousin John [Quisenberry] concerning some business or legal help the latter had sought, and a cabinet card photograph of Beatty.
