Papers, 1883-1979.

The Vida Dutton Scudder papers consist of printed material, writings, photographs, and correspondence. The greater part of the correspondence consists of letters to Margaret Storrs Grierson (1945-53). Since most of Scudder's papers were destroyed at her own request, the journals contained in this collection are of particular interest. They include her College Settlement [Association] Notebook (1908) which contains meeting, general, and personal notes; six journals (1932-45) containing the original draft of her autobiography as well as personal reflections; and 3 handwritten essays (1884, n.d.). In addition there are clippings and articles (1884-1935) including those from the "Andover Review" (1887-92), "Atlantic Monthly" (1883-31), and the "Yale Review" (1914-21); and 3 of her books.

Their ideal was not philanthropy but democracy, which they defined as "a free flowing life between group and group." Residents and mem...
