Botanical work at North Carolina State began in concert with the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, which was established in the 1870s and later became part of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Advisory Council "advises the university administration on how best to meet the needs of the state's people through its programs and activities, especially in the area of extension and research."
