Part of a group of negatives taken for July 21, 1964, Arkansas Gazette article "Remember 'Big Mama, ' World's Largest Towboat?," B1:2. In 1964, Deane visited H.C. Young of Williford, Sharp County, Arkansas and made copy negatives of his collection of photographs of steamboats. Built in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa in 1901, the towboat "Sprague," nicked named "Big Mama," was the world's largest towboat at one time. The Sprague hauled many types of material and was owned by several companies. The boat was retired to Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi in 1948 to be used as a theatre for the oldest running melodrama in the world, "Gold in the Hills," until it caught on fire in 1974.
