Letters to Vincent Starrett thank him for a copy of a book, comment on textual errors in "Jurgen," and reflect on poetry, his work, old age and health. Letters to Louis Untermeyer compliment his work, comment on the writing of poetry and prose, his own work and old age. In addition there is a letter to a Mr. Ashfield, an admirer of Cabell's work, and three of Cabell's bookplates.

Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem). The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice contended the book was obscene. A trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame.
