Part of a group of negatives taken for June 20, 1965, Arkansas Gazette article "Fort Smith: An Echo of the Frontier," E5:2. The National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas dates to 1819. Among those buried at the cemetery are Major William Bradford of Virginia; Confederate General A.E. Steen who died at the Battle of Prairie Grove; Thomas Russell of Massachusetts; Confederate Brigadier General James McIntosh; Brigadier General William O. Darby; and many unknown soldiers. Pictured is the tombstone of Thomas Russell. It reads, "Thomas Russell. Massachusetts. Surgeon U.S. Army. War of 1812. August 21, 1819."
