The Alfred Williams Anthony collection consists of a variety of materials pertaining to his research for the book Bates College and its background, which was published in 1936. Included is an unrevised first draft; a folder of omitted chapters and appendices; numerous pages of notes; and extensive correspondence pertaining to inquiries Anthony made of Bates alumni regarding the early history of Bates. Correspondents include William F. and C.A. Garcelon, the sons of Dr. Alonzo Garcelon, and Lillian G. Bates, daughter of Benjamin Bates, for whom the College was named. Also included are letters between Anthony and students from the early days of the college. In addition there is correspondence regarding the Lebanon Academy and the Maine Central Institute and their relationship to Bates College.

Alfred Williams Anthony (1860-1939) graduated from the Cobb Divinity School, then affiliated with Bates College, in 1885. Following additional study at Brown and Berlin University and a pastorate in Bangor, he returned to Cobb Divinity School in 1890 to become Chair of New Testament Exegesis and Criticism.
