Gila County photographs, ca. 1885-1935.

Summary: Copy prints of Globe and Gila County scenes, many of which were published in Woody's book Globe, Arizona. Images include birds-eye-views of Globe, a Flagstaff street scene, Pinal Ranch house, Silver King, Arizona, a water vehicle spraying dirt streets, interior and exterior of the St. Elmo Saloon, the Tewksbury ranch house, the Kinney boarding house with a sign advertising "hot and cold baths", the first train to arrive in Globe, and the Dime Theater. Other images include school groups, a picnic group that includes George W.P. Hunt, the Globe Volunteer Fire Department, and the Globe City Band. There are also images of Miami, Arizona including the construction of buildings for the Inspiration Copper Company in 1913-1914. People represented include John Rhodes, Al Sieber, Mary Tewksbury, Rev. Frances J. Uplegger, and Sylvia Kennedy in a uniform during World War I.

Biographical note: Missionary; Francis J. Uplegger was a Lutheran minister who arrived at San Carlos with his family in 1919 to establish a mission to the San Carlos Apache. He learned their language, then translated the Lutheran catechism, creed, liturgy and bible into Apache. Uplegger also wrote a four-volume Apache-English dictionary and assisted the Apache in writing their constitution. Uplegger was officially adopted into the San Carlos community in 1961.
