Series 18-20 of record group 59-4 consist of documents (ca. 1847) relating to the town of Michigan, Michigan (later Lansing, Michigan), originally collected by either the Michigan Geological Survey or the Michigan Lands Division. Series 18 consists of a map, being section 16, S., part of 9 & N. 1/2 of 21 in T.4 N., R.2 W., Ingham County(2 pieces, size 17 1/4" x 19 3/4"), blueprint (2 pieces, size 19" x 21", 20" x 24 1/2", scale 20 rods : 1 in.), and colored squares showing block 249-capitol, block 115-state office, public building land (2 pieces, size 19 3/4" x 23 1/2", 19 1/4" x 23 1/2"). Series 19 consists of an autograph specifications of the town of Michigan, signed by W.H. Horton, register of Ingham County. Series 20 consists of a map of section 16 in township no. 4 N., range 2 W., in the county of Ingham. Constitutes the central portion of the town of Michigan, 21" x 25" in size, with a scale of 20 rods : 1 in.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
