World War I cartoon collection, 1914-1918.

The collection is formed by three large bound scrapbooks containing cartoons, essays, poetry and illustrations that describe events and military/political figures prominent in the period of the First World War, 1914-1918. All the cartoons are drawn in support of the Allies. Cartoonists represented include Louis Raemaekers, Nelson Harding, Rollin Kirby and Robert Carter.

Artist Rollin Kirby was born in Illinois, and studied art in New York and Paris. Initially an illustrator, he made his mark as an editorial cartoonist for the New York Mail, New York Post, and New York World. He became the leading political cartoonist of the Jazz Age, and won three Pulitzer Prizes in the 1920s. He also wrote plays and contributed articles to various periodicals. Robert Carter was born and raised in Chicago. He began his career there as a sketch artist, until a move to New York City in 1910, courtesy of William Randolph Hearst and the New York American. Regarded as one of America's great cartoonists, Carter's work included strip comics and political cartoons that showcased his knowledge of composition and anatomy.
