Military, business, and family papers, 1775-1878, of William Perkins, captain in John Crane's Battalion of Artillery and later commander of Castle Island in Boston Harbor. Military papers include correspondence, orders and commissions, muster rolls, payroll records, returns of ordnance and stores, and equipment and clothing receipts. Military correspondence includes a 1777 letter from Henry Knox ordering Perkins to raise a company in Peekskill, N.Y.; orders and commissions include acts by the Rhode Island General Assembly regarding military stores in Providence that Perkins oversaw from 1779-1781; muster rolls and returns include records of John Crane's Battalion at Valley Forge in 1778. Business papers include correspondence and other records from Perkins' tenure as commander of Castle Island from 1785 to 1798, including letters from Gov. John Hancock and a letter from Samuel Adams requesting the fort's guns be fired during Hancock's funeral, as well as two documents from Perkins' work as inspector and measurer of Boston from 1798-1802. Family papers include genealogical notes and correspondence among descendants.
